Daycare Tour Checklist: Questions for Georgia Parents
Daycare Tour Checklist: Questions for Georgia Parents
A childcare tour is your chance to picture your child’s day—not just see a classroom. Bring a few questions, watch how teachers interact with children, and leave time to talk about your family’s routines. You do not need to decide on the spot.
Before your visit
Write down your child’s age, the days and hours you need, and anything you would like the team to understand. Think about your actual drive from home or work, including pickup traffic.
Look up the individual campus through Georgia DECAL’s family resources. Check the facility details rather than relying only on the brand name. If you are comparing Quality Rated participation, use Georgia’s Quality Rated information. Licensing and a quality rating are different things; ask which applies to this particular campus.
Questions to bring
Teachers and classroom care
- Who would care for my child, and how do families meet the classroom team?
- How do you comfort a child who is upset or finding drop-off difficult?
- What is the group size in this classroom? How do you maintain supervision during transitions and staff breaks?
- How do teachers learn about each child’s interests, routines and support needs?
Watch for warm responses, attentive supervision and children who can reach appropriate play materials. Ask questions about what you observe rather than judging the entire program from one moment.
Learning and daily routines
- What might a typical day look like for my child’s program?
- How do play, stories, movement and rest fit together?
- How do you adjust activities when children need more support or a new challenge?
- How will you share what my child is learning with me?
For an infant, ask how the team works with your family on feeding, rest and comforting routines. For an older child, ask about friendships, independence and transitions to the next classroom. The answers should relate to your child—not a promise that every child reaches milestones on the same schedule.
Practical arrangements
- What are this campus’s current hours and planned closure days?
- What enrollment documents must be completed before the first day?
- What should we bring, label or leave at home?
- How are authorized pickups checked, and how do we update those permissions?
- How do you communicate about illness, incidents, medication instructions and allergies?
- Who should I contact with a question or concern?
Ask for the written policies you need to review. For any health-related care instructions, discuss your child’s specific needs with the campus and your healthcare professional.
After the tour
Use the same short notes for each campus:
| What matters to us | What we observed | What we still need to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom relationships | ||
| Daily routines and communication | ||
| Drive, hours and pickup | ||
| Our child’s individual needs |
Choose the questions most important to your family and follow up on anything unclear. A useful tour leaves you with specific answers, not pressure to make an immediate decision.
