"To cultivate a vibrant community of lifelong learners by blending academic rigor with the nurturing warmth of home, ensuring every child feels seen, valued, and capable."
Our Story
From one classroom to a community.
Chroma Early Learning Academy began with a single location in Canton and a mission to redefine "daycare." We didn't just want to watch children; we wanted to ignite them.
Over the last years, we have grown into a network of 19+ campuses across Metro Atlanta, yet each location retains the intimacy and personal touch of that very first school. We are locally owned, operated by educators, and driven by the success of our families.

Lanitra Smith
Regional Director
Hello, my name is Lanitra Smith, and I am known in the Child Development industry as Ms. Nickey. I began my career in 1991 as a substitute teacher in a preschool classroom, not realizing at the time that I was stepping into my true purpose. After just three months, I advanced to a leadership role as third in charge, and from there my passion for early childhood education continued to grow.
I began caring for children in my home and later opened my first child care center as a director and owner in 1994. I went on to successfully operate Nursery Rhymes Child Care Center for 24 years, building a strong foundation in early learning, leadership, and program development. During that time, I also earned my Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC) and continued to grow professionally in the field.
In 2018, I made one of the most difficult decisions of my career and closed my business. I am currently continuing my education and have completed my Bachelor of Science in Business. I am also pursuing further studies in Business Management, with only a few credits remaining in my academic journey.
I bring over 35 years of experience in child care and 24 years as an owner-director. Beyond my professional life, I am a proud mother of one son and a loving grandmother. I enjoy my faith in God, dancing, spending time with family and friends, and watching sports.
Laura Newman
Quality Assurance and Compliance
Quality Assurance and Compliance
Laura Newman has extensive experience in the early care and education sector. Positions to support her knowledge include a classroom teacher, resource coordinator, director of education, and director of a shared services project for the state of Georgia’s Child Care Resource and Referral agency. Additionally, she was the quality assurance specialist at a child care franchise, and most recently, a senior product development and instructional design associate tasked with creating online training for industry professionals and social service agencies.
Her passion for supporting those who work tirelessly for families and the staff who care for them was met by voluntarily serving three years as a consulting editor for NAEYC’s award-winning peer-reviewed journal, Young Children. Formerly, a Level II state-approved trainer, Laura designed a successful peer-to-peer cohort model she called, Director to Director which garnered national attention. Across three regions and every month, program owners and their management teams received her training content with resources aligned to each of the 27 administrative topics. This opportunity to create and then personally deliver advanced-level training matched her ambitious goal to fill the gap in options that support business and leadership needs while creating a space that built camaraderie and a necessary circle of support among hard-working peers.
Laura lives in Alpharetta with her husband. They have four children and are blessed with several grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys antiquing, creative jewelry design, interior design, weekends at their lake house, and traveling to the mountains for self-renewal.

Sonia Atkins
Executive Director
Greetings,
My name is Sonia Atkins. I am so honored to be given the opportunity to be a part of the Chroma Family. I am looking forward to all the fun and adventures; all of the experience and growth here at Chroma of West Cobb. I am having a blast getting to know all of the families and sharing my experiences with them in an effort to continue to enhance the growth of this school as well as to create a space that is nurturing and fun-filled each day.
I was born in Walterboro, South Carolina but my mother and I relocated to a small town in Georgia as a young girl. I am the only child from my mother. From my father, I am the second oldest out of eight. I married my High School Sweetheart a week after I graduated High School and that was 36 years ago. We have four adult sons, four beautiful grand-daughters, and two amazingly handsome grandsons. I enjoy spending as much time as possible with all of them. I love dancing, singing, and watching tv. I get joy from helping others to grow and achieve their goals.
I accepted a summer job position as a classroom monitor at sixteen years old and I never left the childcare field. I have an Associate’s Degree in ECE, a Bachelor’s Degree of science in Management, and as of April 27th of this year (2025) I will be the proud recipient of a Master’s of Science in Psychology I have my 40 hours Director Training Certificate, my certificate of Licensure. I am CPR and First Aid certified as well as certified in areas that make the classroom work smoothly and productively. Teaching is/was my passion and I love to see the students get so excited about learning. That is what fuels me to do more. I believe that Whitney Houston said it best in a song that states, “I BELIEVE THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE, TEACH THEM WELL AND LET THEM LEAD THE WAY. SHOW THEM ALL THE BEAUTY THEY POSSESS INSIDE, GIVE THEM A SENSE OF PRIDE TO MAKE IT EASIER”. As a Director/ Educator that it is my charge; my duty. I want them to learn and play and have a blast at it. They should feel so secure and so motivated that they only see stars because that is the limit…….THE STARS!!!
